Esther M. Zimmer Lederberg
Puffs, Fringes and Fronts

Puffs (or "poofs" or "poufs") and fronts were frizzled or wavy hair, rolled over a puffy foundation, meant to be worn on the forehead, at the hairline. Puffs looked like forehead curls, but must be distinguished from curls located at the temples or sides of the head (called "favorites").
Fringes were scalloped curls, sewn down the center, intended to be worn on the forehead, at the hairline.
